Paul Khalil, MD

Dr. Paul Khalil is a pediatric emergency medicine specialist and serves as medical director of the Point-of-Care Ultrasound Program (POCUS) within the Emergency Department at Nicklaus Children’s Hospital. In his role as medical director of the Point-of-Care Ultrasound Program, Dr. Khalil provides oversight of the program, coordinates education and ultrasound research and is responsible for developing, monitoring and revising the quality assurance process. Dr. Khalil earned his medical degree from West Virginia University in Morgantown. He completed a residency in pediatrics at Nicklaus Children’s Hospital, followed by a fellowship in pediatric emergency medicine at the same institution. Dr. Khalil then pursued advanced training with a point-of-care ultrasound in pediatric emergency medicine fellowship at University of Colorado/Denver Health Medical Center. His clinical interests include point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS), regional anesthesia and sports injuries.

Dr. Khalil is board certified in general pediatrics and pediatric emergency medicine. He is a fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics and member of the American College of Emergency Physicians and the Society of Clinical Ultrasound Fellowships. His work has been published in peer-reviewed journals and he has presented at medical conferences. Dr. Khalil has also participated in various international mission trips.

Dr. Khalil is employed by Nicklaus Children’s Pediatric Specialists (NCPS), the physician-led multispecialty group practice of Nicklaus Children’s Health System.

The Emergency Department at Nicklaus Children’s Hospital is one of the most visited emergency rooms in the nation and has a team of board-certified and fellowship-trained attending pediatric specialists and subspecialists on call, 24 hours a day. To continue to be a leader in ensuring patient satisfaction, the entire staff continually devises and implements strategies to reduce patient waiting time, enhance the waiting room atmosphere and improve the delivery of care for patients and families. The Emergency Department is also home to the Miguel "Mike" B. Fernandez Family Pediatric Trauma Center, the only freestanding Level I pediatric trauma center in South Florida. An adjoining helipad enhances the facility’s ability to handle incoming traumas, as well as transfers from other hospitals.
